For his new album As Water is to Fish, Wim Mertens starts from the following three statements which function as a guide, as a fil rouge:

1. When a fish cries in the water, can you see it?
2. Like a fish is unaware of the water
3. The way fish don’t need a word for water

The bond between fish and water is so close, so inseparable that it is almost impossible to imagine it being undone-untying the knot.
The composer explores ways of loosening this relationship-Weakening it though this is not for weaklings. In this sense, Mertens produces fresh, new beginnings, each time again-Une
fois chaque fois, as an Amorce.

His focus turns instead to Brachliegende terrains where he accepts Error-tolerant behavior. Think of the sudden, fish-like movements and unpredictable human behavior.
Brussels effective Brussels or in whose waters does one goes fishing?
Catch-all procedures can be sidestepped or overcome through the technique of Mutual Overwriting. Put differently, fish, Bon gré mal gré, love to break free and leap above the net rather than remain below it.
We are sure you understand the composer’s first reaction after finishing his work when he says: “Want het was me het weekje weer wel” - “Well, it was quite a week.”
But the question remains: “En wat gebeurde er met Wim?” - “And what happened to Wim?

All music performed by the Wim Mertens Orchestra.
